Introduction
This web page summarizes flights of JPL Microwave Temperature Profilers (MTP) from 1976 to 2003. It is intended for use by those wishing to identify MTP data that might be useful for specific atmospheric studies. There is an emphasis on Clear Air Turbulence (CAT) since the web page was first constructed for the purpose of identifying flights for an investigating of a method for predicting CAT.
Most of the MTP flight data listed here are in the "public domain" and can be acquired in several ways. The simplest way is to request MTP data from the Principal Investigator for the mission in question. Most of the data is also archived on a computer at NASA's Ames Research Center (ARC), which would require the stablishment of access privileges by an ARC archivist. CD's have been created for most missions, and these also can be acquired from the ARC archivist.
You can quickly go to a section of this web page by clicking on one of the following mission internal links:

Symbol Definitions
Each mission is described with the same format. The first line includes the mission name, the aircraft on wich the MTP was flown, the number of flights with MTP data and the number of useful MTP flight hours. Next, the mission acronym is decoded. Then a "base of operations" is given. This is the city where the most-used airport is located. Then the MTP principal investigator (PI) for that mission is given with initials: BLG = Bruce L. Gary, and MJM = Michael J. Mahoney. The rest of the information is in columns, described below.
Column 1: Flight number within the mission
Column 2: Flight date, entered in the YYMMDD format.
Column 3: Flight duration, entered as kiloseconds (from near take-off to landing).
Column 4: CAT intensity is entered as a number, according to the
following code:
5 = Severe
4 = moderate/Severe
3 = Moderate
2 = Light/Moderate
1 = Light
0 = Smooth
The flights having "?" entries will be assigned a CAT intensity category
after I conduct an analysis correlating pilot-reported intensity with accelerometer
characteristics. Some flights have more extensive pilot reports of
CAT than given below.
Column 5: The first location is for the take-off airport, and
if a second location is given (i.e., CA/HI) the second one is for the destination
airport. For long flights the direction for the farthest point
is indicated by a compass direction (i.e., CA/ne = from CA to the northeast,
and return). Local flights are designated with "l" (i.e, CA/l). Some
location abbreviations:
CA = Califonia (Ames Research Center)
HI = Hawaii (Barber's Point Naval Air Station)
AK = Alaska (Fairbanks)
NR = Norway (Stavanger)
IC = Iceland (Reykjavik)
GR = Greenland
KIR = Kiruna, Sweden
NZ = New Zealand (Christchurch)
FJ = Fiji (Nandi)
AUS = Australia (Darwin)
WUS = Western US (when a large region of the West is covered)
PA = Punta Arenas, Chile
Wal = Wallops Island, VA
ME = Maine (Bangor)
KS = Kansas (Salinas)
TH = Tahiti
Can = Canada
MB = Melbourne, Australia
TV = Townsville, Australia
Ok = Okinawa Island
IR = Ireland (Killarney)
Az = Azores
EI = Easter Island
NP = North Pole
JAX = Jacksonville, Florida
Column 6: Pilot-reported CAT descriptions; they are verbatim records of what the pilot stated during the post-flight pilot debrief, PD. For the DC-8 flights if an MTP operator was aboard (which was the case for all but the AVSAR mission) entries are taken from the flight notes, FN, of the MTP operator. For occasions when neither a pilot report , or an MTP operator report, are available, I will use the MTP accelerometer data to assign a CAT intensity. This requires use of an empirical relationhip between cases with subjective intensity reports and objectively measured accelerometer PkPk (peak-to-peak vertical accelerometer reading range during a 15-second observing cycle).
